Spain eyes Morocco’s red meats market

Developing and modernizing the red meat sector in Morocco was the subject of a meeting held, on Tuesday in Rabat, at the initiative of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Services of the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra Region.

Gathering entrepreneurs and government representatives from Morocco and Spain, the meeting highlighted the potential offered by Morocco and Spain in the red meat sector, while underlining the need to develop and strengthen all related sectors by encouraging investment.

This meeting, which mainly aims to strengthen trade cooperation between the two countries and explore a bilateral agreement on exporting Spanish red meat to Morocco, provided a perfect opportunity to bolster ties and open up new business opportunities.

The participants stressed the importance of developing the partnership between Moroccan entrepreneurs and their Spanish peers, to guarantee supplies to both countries’ markets, meet consumer needs and develop bilateral trade.

Speaking on the occasion, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Services of the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra Region, Hassan Sakhi, said that several trade agreements will be sealed between the economic stakeholders to rehabilitate and modernize the Red Meat sector.

For his part, the President of the Spanish Meat Production Association (ANAFRIC), José Friguls, stressed that the meeting, attended by 11 Spanish companies, was part of the final preparations for the launch of red meat exports from Spain to Morocco.

He stated that the Moroccan government granted facilities to Spanish red meat exporters, adding that this move was of great importance to both countries’ economies.

Several measures have been adopted to facilitate export operations, including customs benefits, he said, adding that exporters have been contacted to begin export procedures.

For her part, Susanna Barquin, Business Solutions Manager in the public company Prodeca, under the Catalan Ministry of Agriculture, explained that the aim of this mission of Spanish businessmen is to promote red meat trade with Morocco.

Deputy Speaker of Morocco’s House of Councilors, Lahcen Haddad, said that Morocco made considerable efforts to achieve a degree of self-sufficiency in red meats, but the Covid crisis and successive years of drought caused a disruption in red meat production, prompting the government to take several measures.

The Moroccan Parliament supports joint action between Morocco and Spain to develop the red meat sector, he stressed, underlining the importance of customs advantages in the import process and price competitiveness.

The meeting was held to strengthen economic cooperation and trade, with a view to signing a bilateral agreement for the export of Spanish meat to Morocco.
