Tax reviews in Tangier yield substantial revenue

Tax audits targeting thousands of business leaders in Tangier have resulted in significant contributions to state coffers, with many individuals willingly complying, sources familiar with the process confirmed.

Around 4,000 business figures, including politicians, paid the reconciliation tax — set at 5% — before the end of 2024, according to sources.

The audits, which involved extensive verification, took up to six months for some individuals to complete. Others managed to resolve their cases in as little as two weeks. While the exact total amount recovered remains unknown, the sums are described as “substantial.”

The tax reviews included high-profile figures combining political and investment roles in the northern city. Payments under the reconciliation tax framework reportedly reached hundreds of millions of dirhams.

Some business leaders expressed frustration with the strict approach of tax authorities, who refused to offer any leniency. Despite this, most made the payments promptly to meet the deadline ahead of 2025.

The rush to pay reconciliation taxes is not limited to Tangier, with similar activity reported in major cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakesh, and Agadir.
