Morocco’s ONHYM joins forces with Lithium Africa for mineral exploration in Sahara

The National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mining (ONHYM) has partnered with LARC Morocco SAS, a subsidiary of Lithium Africa Resources Corp, to explore lithium and gold potential in the Bir El Mami area, located in the Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region.

This collaboration was announced by ONHYM in a statement published on its official LinkedIn account on Thursday, November 14th. The agreement was signed by Amina Benkhadra, ONHYM’s Director General, and Carl Esprey, CEO of LARC Morocco.

The agreement aims to advance Morocco’s strategy for promoting strategic metals essential for the energy transition and the country’s industrial sovereignty. Lithium, a key component in manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), is a critical element in this strategy.

Lithium Africa is a company specializing in lithium exploration, with several licenses covering 2,500 km² across Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali, and Zimbabwe. The company has also formed a joint venture with Ganfeng Lithium, a Chinese leader in lithium battery production and sales, to further develop lithium exploration in Africa.
