Morocco to strengthen consumer protection laws amid surge in e-commerce fraud

Morocco is set to update the country’s consumer protection law to include specific provisions addressing online transactions.

This move comes in response to a surge in e-commerce activity, with transactions reaching MAD 22 billion in 2023.

The government aims to ensure that consumers are protected from fraudulent practices, misleading advertising, and other forms of online exploitation.

Consumer protection associations have welcomed the initiative, saying that there is a need for stricter regulations to address the increasing number of scams and fraudulent activities.

The associations said it’s important to have a legal framework that can effectively protect consumers’ rights and interests.

Bouazza Kharrati, President of the Moroccan Federation for Consumer Rights, told Hespress Ar that there is an increase in fraud cases, particularly in online sales, and emphasized the need for stronger regulations to protect consumers.

Kharrati noted that with the rise of digital transactions, fraudsters have found new ways to exploit loopholes, making legal updates necessary to close these gaps.

Kharrati also pointed out that many consumer complaints are related to misleading online sales practices.

The president said that the new rules are needed to better regulate digital marketplaces and ensure fair competition, which would help reduce fraudulent activities that harm both consumers and the economy.

Ouadie Madih, an expert in consumer protection law and founder of the UNICONSO association, said that while existing laws offer some level of protection, they are not enough to deal with persistent online fraud.

Madih mentioned that it is often difficult to trace online sellers, as platforms may not provide clear information about their identities.

The expert said that he hopes the new regulations will solve these issues by setting stricter rules for online businesses.

Madih added that many buyers have faced scams where sellers disappear or disconnect their phone lines after a transaction goes wrong. This has led to a decline in consumer trust in online shopping, making it urgent to introduce new legal measures to protect customers and restore confidence in e-commerce.
