Morocco becomes one of the UK’s largest fresh vegetable suppliers

Morocco is now one of the largest exporters of fresh vegetables to the UK, accounting for 7.5% of the total volume of these exports in 2023, according to the UK Food Security Report (UKFSR/2024).

The report, prepared by the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), also notes an increase in agricultural imports from Morocco in 2023, as part of  the growing agricultural ties between the two countries.

In addition to Morocco, the report identifies Spain, the Netherlands, France, and Poland as major exporters of agricultural products to the UK. This diversification of trade partners has helped strengthen the UK’s resilience against global shocks, such as extreme weather events and geopolitical tensions.

The report further addresses Morocco’s prominent position in global fertilizer production, alongside China and the United States, as one of the largest producers of phosphate rock. Although phosphate fertilizer production saw a slight decline of 1.9%, reaching 46.1 million tonnes between 2019 and 2022, long-term trends indicate overall growth in this sector.

The UK Food Security Report, which is presented to the Westminster Parliament at least once every three years, provides a comprehensive analysis of food security trends in the UK.

It draws on a broad range of data from official, academic, and intergovernmental sources to offer an impartial assessment of the country’s food security situation.
