Secretary of State for Fisheries, Zakia Driouch, announced on Wednesday in Rabat that the fishing sector achieved export sales of nearly 31 billion dirhams in 2023, with a volume of 847,000 tons.
The fisheries sector represented 7% of total exports and 39% of agricultural and food exports, said Driouch during a meeting with the heads of federations and associations active in the processing, valorization, and marketing of fishery products.
Morocco has 518 units for processing marine products, including mainly freezing and canning units, in addition to other valorization activities that according to the secretary of state contribute a large part to exports of national food industry products.
She also referred to the efforts made over the past two decades, which have enabled the sector to strengthen its organization, thanks to the “Halieutis” strategy launched by King Mohammed VI in 2009 that works to improve aquaculture performance, enhance food security and maintain the long-term sustainability of aquatic resources.
Driouch said that despite the effects of climate change, investments in the sector in 2023 exceeded 930 million dirhams in 2023, and created more than 126,000 direct jobs.
The official stressed the need to strengthen the achievements made by strengthening the partnership between the public and private sectors, and adopting new measures aimed at modernizing infrastructure and exploiting the potential of the blue economy.
The heads of federations and associations working in the processing, valorization, and marketing of fishery products, along with the actors present, affirmed their commitment to initiatives that would facilitate the implementation of strategic orientations related to the development of this sector, and address the challenges associated with it.”
