Enhancing maritime transport and trade exchanges between Morocco and Spain was the focus of a technical meeting held Thursday in this southern Spanish port city.
The meeting, organized by the Motril Port Authority and the Spanish Association for the Promotion of Short-Sea Shipping, discussed the theme “Enhancing the Competitiveness of Short-Sea Shipping.” Key topics included sustainability, logistical efficiency, and strengthening trade competitiveness between the two nations.
José García Fuentes, President of the Motril Port Authority, highlighted the strategic geographic positions of both Morocco and Spain, noting their importance as vital transit points for trade between Europe and Africa.
Idris Ahrabi, Director of Imports and Exports at Tangier Med Port, praised the “exemplary” cooperation between the two ports, describing Tangier Med as “the most important port in Africa” and “the best connection between Europe and Africa.”
The collaboration, García Fuentes added, has been pivotal in boosting economic and logistical ties between Morocco and Spain and improving the competitiveness of regular maritime routes.
García Fuentes also outlined the significant investments made in port infrastructure to improve efficiency, noting the role of such investments in driving economic development in coastal regions.
Luisa García Chamorro, Mayor of Motril, emphasized the economic impact of the regular maritime link with Morocco, pointing out that it not only facilitates trade but also attracts Moroccan tourists to the Granada region.
The meeting centered on three main issues: the future of short-sea shipping between Tangier and Spain, new opportunities from the expansion of the border control center in Motril, and the ongoing challenges of reducing logistics costs in maritime transport.
A roundtable discussion also addressed the logistical challenges and opportunities in the sector, with input from customs officials, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, shipping companies, and logistics providers.
