Essaouira-Mogador has reached a historic milestone in 2024, surpassing one million tourists, announced Mr. Redwane Khanne, President of the Essaouira Provincial Tourism Council (CPT).
The city also saw over 3 million overnight stays in 2024.
These figures only account for classified establishments, with the CPT noting that the substantial flow from informal accommodations and home rentals (such as Airbnb) should also be considered, as they have traditionally represented a significant share of the local tourism market.
Khanne highlighted a key trend in 2024: the fading of traditional seasonal fluctuations in tourist numbers. “Essaouira now sees high occupancy throughout the year—winter, summer, autumn, and spring.”
This growth, Khanne explained, is driven by the local civil society, particularly the Essaouira-Mogador Association, which organizes numerous music festivals and conferences focusing on culture, arts, and heritage, central to the city’s sustainable development strategy.
Looking ahead, the CPT expressed optimism for the year to come, noting the impressive progress on the Cité des Arts, Culture, and Heritage, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, and the launch of a 5 billion dirham investment project for the development of the “Mogador” resort.
The CPT emphasized the need to address connectivity challenges to strengthen Essaouira’s exceptional momentum, ensuring its continued growth in both national and international tourism.
