Morocco is at the forefront of ecological development and renewables promotion, owing to its rich potential and its innovative energy policy, a panel of eminent experts in green technologies stressed on Thursday in Rimini.
“The Kingdom has become an African leader in energy transition, as it has developed its own plan for solar and wind power, hydropower, as well as green ammonia,” Abdessamad Faik, research professor at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and Director of the Laboratory of Inorganic Materials for Sustainable Energy Technologies (LIMSET), emphasized at the Ecomondo 2024 trade fair, held on November 5-8 in Rimini.
Giving an overview of Morocco’s renewables development plan, Faik, who was moderating a panel at the 4th edition of the African Green Growth Forum, on the sidelines of the Ecomondo trade fair, highlighted, among other things, the national project to develop green hydrogen and gigafactories.
He also highlighted the importance of training in the platform installation, and also training tomorrow’s managers in Morocco and Africa.
Welcoming the cooperation with RES4Africa Foundation (Renewable Energy Solutions for Africa), which offers training to develop new professional skills in the energy sector, Faik underlined the Moroccan training program as a model to be followed in national universities and those of African countries.
“There are two ongoing projects. These are the production of green hydrogen destined for export to Europe, and the OCP project aiming to produce 1 million tons of green ammonia by 2027 and 3 million tons of green ammonia by 2023,” he said.
For his part, Head of Scientific Communication & Cooperation Department at the Research Institute for Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN), Mouhcine Benmeziane, praised the cooperation between Morocco and Italy in energy training, highlighting the importance of the energy center of excellence to be set up in the Kingdom.
This center, which is part of the Mattei Plan, will share skills and know-how with other countries on the African continent, he said, adding that it “will make a difference by giving birth to a new generation of experts capable of creating energy solutions.”
“Morocco has immensely invested in renewables, in accordance with the High Guidelines of HM King Mohammed VI, instauring a new inclusive and sustainable energy model which will benefit Africa,” said Khalid Atlassi, Advisor at Morocco’s Embassy in Italy.
He added that, by setting up the objective to generate 52% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030, Morocco is demonstrating that accelerated economic growth can go hand in hand with an ambitious ecological strategy.
Thanks to HM the King’s enlightened vision, Morocco is also a pioneer in the circular economy, an essential pillar for sustainable growth, he said, recalling the launch of several initiatives to recycle and valorize waste, promote the bioeconomy, and encourage responsible resource management.
These initiatives, he added, are designed to strengthen the Kingdom’s partnership with the European Union, while establishing solid partnerships with several African countries in sustainable agriculture, water access and renewables.
