Banks in 20 countries, including Morocco, have stopped servicing UnionPay cards issued by Gazprombank due to new U.S. sanctions.
This means cash withdrawals via these cards are no longer possible in countries like Argentina, Hungary, Vietnam, Greece, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Qatar, Mexico, the UAE, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, South Africa, South Korea, and Japan.
The sanctions, imposed on November 21, target Gazprombank and its foreign subsidiaries in Africa, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, and Cyprus. The U.S. cited Gazprombank’s role in financing Russia’s war with Ukraine, including facilitating transactions for military equipment and soldier payments.
