Morocco implements biological rest period to protect fisheries, hiking up sardine prices

Morocco has kicked off its annual biological rest period to help preserve its marine resources, particularly sardines, as part of efforts to safeguard the country’s fishery stocks from increasing human and environmental pressures.

The rest period, which began January 1, applies to the southern coasts of Morocco, including areas from “Tgnaj” near Agadir to “Cap Boujdour.” This measure will last one and a half months, while a longer, two-month rest period will cover the waters between “Cap Boujdour” and “Cap Blanc,” ending in February.

This biological rest period primarily targets surface fish, including sardines, which are a staple food for many Moroccan families. Currently, sardine prices in local markets have reached up to 16 dirhams per kilogram, with experts warning of possible price hikes as the rest period continues.

Fishing professionals see the biological rest period as essential for reducing pressures on fish stocks. Abdelkader Touirbi, national secretary of the National Union of Fishermen and Captains of Fishing Vessels, emphasized that the initiative is a vital step to ensure the long-term sustainability of Morocco’s fishery resources.

“This measure supports the preservation and future sustainability of our fish stocks,” Touirbi said. “It coincides with the spawning season of sardines and surface fish, ensuring their availability in the spring.”

The biological rest period, which has been enforced in various forms for decades, is expected to have market repercussions. Abdelkader Sbar, a fishing industry professional from Laayoune, explained that although the rest period benefits fish stocks, it leads to higher prices for sardines and other targeted species due to decreased availability.

“The success of these measures depends on careful studies and the full cooperation of the industry,” Sbar said.
