Trade between the UK and Morocco reached nearly £4 billion in the 12 months ending June 2024, an 11% increase from the previous year, according to the UK Department for Business and Trade.
The UK government has been actively promoting trade and investment, with initiatives such as trade missions and business support programs.
A recent delegation of about 12 British companies, hosted by the British Embassy in Rabat, visited Morocco to strengthen business ties.
Simon Martin, the UK’s ambassador to Morocco, said the UK is committed to investing in Morocco, particularly in infrastructure projects related to the country’s bid for the 2030 World Cup.
The UK’s trade promotion plan includes sending missions to connect British and Moroccan businesspeople, focusing on sectors like railways and airports. Small- and medium-sized enterprises have also played a key role in these initiatives.
UK government data shows that trade between the two countries stood at £3.8 billion by the end of the second quarter of 2024. British exports to Morocco topped £1.4 billion, while imports from Morocco reached about £2.4 billion, a 22% rise compared to the same period in 2023.
Morocco is now the UK’s 52nd-largest trading partner, accounting for 0.2% of total UK trade.
Foreign direct investment from the UK to Morocco hit £17 million in 2022, a more than 300% increase from the previous year.
Since the UK’s departure from the European Union and the signing of a comprehensive partnership agreement with Morocco in January 2021, bilateral trade has surged. In response, former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appointed a trade envoy to further deepen ties with Rabat, as London seeks to tap into Morocco’s ambitious infrastructure projects.
